Australian Classical Music

As settlements and penal colonists became new Australian cities, proper English and European culture made a larger impact. Classical music in the form of choral groups and symphony orchestras emerged in Australia between 1850 and 1890. Many Australian composers at this time kept to European modes of classical music, but some composers were later influenced by Australian folk music. By the first decade of the 20th century, the folk music influence was undeniably present in Australian classical music as composers began to put forth an effort to create a national identity for Australia.

By the 1960s, Australian classical music had become a fully-fledged subcategory of classical music unique in the world. Australian classical music is influenced not only by folk music but also by indigenous music, music from Southeast Asia and some American jazz and blues. Today, state and city-based classical orchestras are very popular in Australia, and chamber orchestras often hold performances for pieces designed for smaller groups.
